How to Compile C file in Windows using Command Line

📌Prerequisites


Before you start coding in C, you should have a compiler installed in your PC. 

But what I recommend is, it’s good to install Visual Studio. 

It’s an IDE integrated Development environment which has full support for editors, resource managers, debuggers and compilers for many languages.

You can install Visual Studio Community Edition. It’s FREE. 🆓

After you have installed, you should verify whether all the required tools have installed and you can use access through the command line.

To verify, go to start and find Developer Command Prompt for Visual Studio inside Visual Studio 2019 folder. It will open up the below window.


Then, type cl and enter in command prompt. 

If you see an output like this, you have set the Visual C++ developer command prompt correctly.



1. Create


Open notepad and type simple helloworld program.


Save the file as helloworld.c

Now, if you see the folder, it should look like,




2. Compile


First thing before entering the compiling command, you should change the directory to where you have saved the C file.

To change directory, go to Visual C++ developer command prompt, and type the command like,

                                                          Here, you have to give your file’s location.

Once you have entered this command, you will see that directory now has changed to your file’s location.

Now enter the command to compile as below.

If you don’t have any errors in your code, you will see an executable program helloworld.exe


Check the file’s location as well. You would see an helloworld.exe application and a 3D object file.



3. Run


To run the application in the command prompt, just type the file name.

Here you will see the output 😍

How to Create, Compile & Run a C program


1. Create a C file

You can use any ordinary text editor to create a C file. In windows, you can find Notepad as a default program. If you are using ubuntu operating system, you can use gedit or vi editors.

When you are saving the file, the file extension should be .c


Eg: helloworld.c

You should write a program where it must be according to the C syntax.


2. Compile a C file

There are many C compilers out there such as default Sun Compiler (cc), GNU C compiler (gcc) and Borland (bcc) compiler.


All these compilers work in the same way and share many common commands.

Command to compile:


Sun Compiler – cc helloworld.c
GNU C compiler – gcc helloworld.c
Borland compiler – bcc helloworld.c



Here, helloworld is the file name.

Note: After compilation, you will a.out file by default. If you want to rename the output, give the command like below.


cc helloworld.c -o hello

In this case, the output file will get renamed to hello.

3. Run a C file


If you didn’t rename the output file, you can simply type ./a.out

If you have renamed, you should run the program as ./hello

I’m writing this post to give a brief introduction to the C programming language. If you want to expertise in programming, you should learn C first. From my experience, anyone who knows the basics of C can easily learn other programming languages too.

Let’s start.

In the past, programmers coded in machine language. It was very hard to remember because the instructions were in terms of only 1's and 0's.

But, C has instructions set in English terms, so it is very easy and convenient for humans.

Even though there are many other programming languages, C is still in use to develop applications.

If you have any idea to develop a new operating system, start learning C, because the language has certain additional features and more conventional and flexible to use for system programming as well as to develop applications.

So let’s start learning C with BB Tech, check my next post to know the structure of a C program.

Hello!

I’m writing this post to show how insertion sort works.

First of all, you should get to know what is insertion sort?

What is Insertion Sort?

It is a simple sorting algorithm which can be used to sort a small set of numbers.

We can connect this with playing cards. Imagine you have a set of cards which are placed upside down on a table. You have to pick one card from the set at a time. Once you have picked the first card, you don’t need to do anything. Once you have picked the second one, you compare the card with which is in your hand. Likewise, you pick up every card and compare with the set of cards in your hand and arrange accordingly.

It’s so simple. This is how insertion sort also works.

Let’s see the actual working now.

You have 5 numbers stored in an array.

              0                           1                           2                            3                             4

You start with the value in index 0, that is number 5. Since you have only one number no need to compare and swap.

Let’s move on to the next index 1, the number is 4. Now, you compare 4 and 5.

4 < 5 Therefore, you need to swap.

 Move on to index 2, the number is 2. First, compare 2 with 5.

2 < 5 therefore, swap.

Now the next number in index 3 is 1. Compare with 5 first.

1 < 5, so swap!!

Move on to last index 4. The number is 3. Compare.

Finally, you have now sorted array. This is how simple insertion sort works.
